East Preston toilets plan welcomed
People have welcomed plans for new toilets at a beach café in East Preston, saying the lack of facilities had forced them to cut walks short and put off people from visiting.
Arun District Council granted permission on October 22 for portable toilets at Salt Beach Kiosk in Sea Road, alongside associated decking and a timber screen fence.
The application received 32 letters of support and four raising no objection, according to the planning officer’s report.
One Supporter, Kate Millward, said: “It would make a huge difference if toilets were available here. So many times we have to cut our walks short as we need to find a public toilet.”

Rositsa Kalindamar, said: “It’s a beautiful spot for locals and tourists, and will benefit hugely if having toilets onsite as not everyone is able to walk 5 minutes on the pebbles to the nearest public toilets.”
J. Maher said: “Myself and my husband regularly visit the beach and Salt. Loving the refurbishment, having a toilet would definitely enhance the facilities. We like to visit with our young grandsons and sometimes my elderly parents. Toilet facilities would definitely make these visits easier and more frequent.”
The planning officer’s report said the toilets would be at least 28 metres from the nearest neighbouring property and concluded they would not harm the character of the area.
The toilets would measure 2.5 metres high and would be screened by 2.6-metre timber fencing.
The report also said the development would enhance the existing facilities and support local tourism by encouraging longer visits to the area.
Permission was granted subject to conditions, including that the development must begin within three years.
