Former Crystal Palace keeper on Crawley Town's draw with Northampton Town and his time at the Reds so far

Jackson Izquierdo thought his Crawley Town side were ‘very good’ in the 1-1 draw with Northampton Town on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old got his first senior start last night as Reds secured a point against the Cobblers, despite a dominant display from the Reds.

The home side took the lead into half time, after Nathan Okopu poked home a rebound off Izquiredo, but Dion Pereira levelled for the Reds in the second half, and it was only the keeping of Zach Jeacock that stopped Crawley from winning the game.

Speaking with club media after the game, the former Crystal Palace said: “I thought we were very good. I thought we played the football we really wanted to play and obviously me coming into the team, I can help do that from the back, but I think overall we had so many chances and, on another day, we score goals.

"But it helps when they get a sending off in around 60 minutes to keep the ball, but I thought overall we can be happy with a point away.”

Izquierdo had a little bit of work to do in the first half, making the initial save from Okopu before he scored, but he was more of a passenger in the second half, as Crawley pressed forward more. He said: “It’s hard though being a goalkeeper when that happens because you don’t do anything for however long and then obviously there’s a free ball out to come out for and they had a corner towards the end, so you’ve got to stay switched on.

“They sat deep and we played football around it and only managed to get the one today. I mean we scored an offside goal. I haven’t looked at it yet. I don’t know if it’s offside or not. It probably is. So yeah, I think on another day we punish our chances.”

As the transfer window closed last night, and with Crawley making 17 new signings in the transfer window, there is a lot of work being done on the training ground, so the players learn to play together. The Reds are creating chances, and goals will come with that work. Izquierdo said: “We’re still a newish team. I know we’ve had a couple of weeks together now but it’s still fine-tuning the play between each other, especially the top guys.

“But yeah, the chances are there and that’s always a positive thing. I think when you’re not creating chances, that’s when it’s not good. So, I think if we can put them away and another night we will. I know that because the quality’s in there. I think we’ll be fine in that department moving forward.”

Crawley currently have four points, all away from home, but have lost both home games. And with the reds travelling to Accrington Stanley on Saturday, it’s a chance to get another three points. “I think we’ve got four points from two games away in the league. You take that any day of the week,” said the keeper. “So, the away form is there. Obviously, we don’t have a home game for a while now, but if we can take that to home games a get a crowd behind us, then obviously we’re going to get points.

“We’re going to be up there. We’re playing good football away from home. We just need to do that at home, and the boys know that and the gaffer’s spoke on that. I think tonight we can be happy with the way we played. We played well. We passed well. Just the chances were just not on our night.”

Izquierdo made his first senior start in the league last night, and was the third goalkeeper used in the four games so far. Vito Mannone started the season but injured his hand in the first game of the season, then Nicolas Michalski came in, and now Izquierdo. He had this to say about his time so far at Crawley: “I come in the building, and I knew minutes were going to be hard to come by. And I got my head down and worked. And when the chances come, I feel like I’ve taken it. It’s always going to be a bit nervy at times, first season start in League Two.

“But I feel like I handled it well, played the way the gaffer wanted me to, and he seems happy with me and the way I played. So, I think I can be positive about myself, but obviously it would have been nice to get the three points.”
