What’s next for England if Gareth Southgate exits after the Euros?

England boss Gareth Southgate has strongly hinted this could his last tournament with England. The Three Lions top Group C after two matches with four points but their performances have not convinced.

Southgate and a number of England players have received strong criticism as the balance and attacking threat of the team looked off in the 1-0 win against Serbia and yesterday’s 1-1 draw against Denmark.

“We didn’t press the ball with our intensity and we kept conceding possession too cheaply and when you do those two things it’s hard to have control in the game,” boss Southgate said.

Despite the sense of concern around the displays, England head into Tuesday evening’s final Group C game against Slovenia in Cologne top of the group.

Their four-point haul will likely be enough to qualify as, at worst, a third-placed side, but the focus is on winning the Euros rather than limping through to the knockout phase.

Asked how big a challenge he is facing, the England boss said: “The challenge is to do something that’s never been done before, so it couldn’t be any bigger."

Should Southgate leave after eight years in charge of the national team, former Brighton boss Graham Potter is among the leading contenders to take over. Potter had three progressive years at Brighton but struggled under difficult circumstances at Chelsea.

Eddie Howe remains a stand-out candidate but the former Bournemouth boss seems happy with his role at Newcastle – although much can change very quickly.

Former Tottenham and Chelsea man Mauricio Pochettino is also among the favourites with the bookmakers and ex-Liverpool man Jurgen Klopp has also entered the running.

Here’s the latest from Oddschecker: Graham Potter 3/1, Eddie Howe 6/1, Mauricio Pochetino 10/1, Lee Carsley 11/1, Pep Guardiola 14/1, Jose Mourinho 16/1, Steven Gerrard 20/1, Steve Cooper 20/1, Jurgen Klopp 20/1, Frank Lampard 25/1.
