Pupils at a Hassocks school ditched their normal uniform for one day to pay tribute to a fellow student.

Pupils at Downlands School traded in their recognisable red jumpers and black leather shoes for ‘crazy trainers’.

Staff and students donned their trainers to celebrate a former student, Daisy Bushnell.

The day, November 2, would have been Daisy’s 15th birthday but she lost her battle with cancer last year.

A spokesman for the school said the ‘crazy trainer’ day was introduced in memory of her ‘funky trainers’ she used to wear.

The spokesperson said: “Daisy brought a smile to all our faces and one of her great loves was wearing crazy trainers, the brighter and more colourful the better.

“She was such a beautiful person, a real bright spark. Sadly Daisy lost her battle with cancer last year but her spirit is very much with us.”

The staff and students all donated £1 to change their foot wear for the day and managed to raise £1,060 which they are donating to the Chestnut Tree House Hospice.
