Assistant boss Michael Hamm was delighted by what he felt was a deserved win.

“It could have easily been five or six but the Cowes keeper pulled off a few blinding saves,” Hamm said.

A slip from a Lions defender let Cowes through to score the opener before Pagham missed three or four good goalscoring opportunities.

A Stan Bridgman double was enough to seal the points – but not before a nervy last 10 minutes after Jordan Layton was sent off for two yellow cards.

Hamm said: “It was a massive win for us to stay with the pack above and after our 2-2 draw with Fareham in the week the squad is re-finding its confidence

"Before Saturday we hadn’t won in 10 but the Portchester home game was a huge turning point – we held the league leaders for a good 60 minutes with an injury-hit side.

“We took that into the Fareham game and a last-minute equaliser from George Bingham gave the squad a much-needed lift.

"The league table doesn’t lie, some games we have felt hard done by and refereeing decisions have gone against us but these aren’t excuses.

“Now we have US Portsmouth away on Saturday followed by Hythe away on Tuesday then Brockenhurst at home. We believe our squad is now in a position to compete with anyone in this league.”

Pagham have recruited ex- Chi City man Ryan Peake, plus Callum Overton and the returning Joe Clarke on dual registration. Evan Harris has joined from Selsey with Preston Woolston moving in the other direction and George Britton has gone to Midhurst.

Hamm said: “We have had lot of injuries and suspensions and haven’t been able to field the same side twice yet.

“Hopefully now we can put a run together and start making our way up the table.”

Selsey 1 Worthing Utd 1

SCFL Division 1

Shane Brazil put the Blues ahead only for Dean Sherwood to cancel it out a short while later.

The result leaves Selsey 5th and Worthing United 9th.

Blues boss Daren Pearce said: “Worthing United were the first team this season to beat league leaders Epsom recently so we knew they would be tough.

“The first half was pretty even with us taking the lead with a good strike from Brazil just before half-time but our visitors pegged us back.

"Second half we pushed hard for the winner and with a little more care in the final third we could have taken the three points.

"It was a hard-fought game and though we didn’t gain the maximum points, it keeps our league run going.”

This Saturday Selsey visit Shoreham.

Bosham 3 Upper Beeding 1

SCFL Div 2

A wonderful strike from Ed Kennett helped inspire Bosham to another important win that moved them up to sixth in the table.

Bosham took to the park confident more success would come against a struggling Upper Beeding side desperate for points.

The game started at a frenetic pace with Bosham quicky into their stride and Kieran Hartley and Lewis Rustell each went close to breaking the deadlock, only for keeper Sam Times to deny them.

On the quarter hour the deadlock was broken thanks to a moment of quality from Kennett.

Graeme Dowden produced a testing ball into the box and when the ball arrived at Kennett’s feet, he missed his first effort but buried his second into the bottom corner.

John Craig was a menace up front for Beeding and drew numerous fouls but the Reds defence was a match for anything.

Seb Tucknott and Ben Adfield went close but failed to find the target.

Fans had to wait to the final quarter of the match for the Reds’ second.

Following a substitution, David Castinheira, with his first touch, latched on to a sublime set-up from Alex Barnes and sidefooted home.

Jack Goacher was on hand to slide in and fire in from a swift counter attack to give Beeding hope.

But Bosham settled it with Rustell bundling home a third from a Dowden cross.

Hopes are high that Bosham can maintain their climb up the table when they travel to Capel next time out.

East Dean 3 Beaumont 2

Chichester Charity Cup

A Haidon Davies double and a first East Dean goal for Robbie Hood was ust about enough to send them through to the quarter-finals of the Chichester Charity Cup.

The home side struggled to get their foot on the ball from the get-go and were on the back foot early on - with Beaumont hitting the post in the opening five minutes.

Davies had a great chance at the other end but the Beaumont keeper pulled of a great save.

Eventually Davies grabbed the opener after a lofted through ball by Aaron Freeman was met by Davies.

It could have been two for the Dean but Ben Pett missed the target from three yards out.

Beaumont had plenty of chances to grab an equaliser and they thought they had one, until the goal was ruled out for offside.

The lead was doubled when Davies played a ball to Hood who kept his nerve in a one on one, tapping the ball underneath the keeper.

The lead was halved by a nicely finished goal. Davies had a brilliant chance to make it 3-1 but his shot was well saved .

With seven minutes left it was 2-2 after a spillage gave the Beaumont striker an easy chance.

Beaumont nearly led but a curling effort from 30 yards rattled the post.
